Music Theory

Learn the fundamentals of music theory and harmony

This is an introductory course for adults (16 years and over), covering fundamental areas of music theory and harmony. The course is designed for learners with no prior knowledge of music theory, explaining key concepts in a logical, step by step manner. Lessons are delivered online, live via Zoom, so a computer with audio, camera and good internet connection is required. Classes are recorded and will be available for all participants.

Music Theory Topics

Week 1 – An Introduction to Music Notation
Week 2 – The Major Scale and its Relative Minor
Week 3 – Triads and an Introduction to Key Signatures
Week 4 – Dynamics and Rhythm
Week 5 – Intervals

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course you will be able to:
• Demonstrate fundamental musical notation principles of pitch and rhythm.
• Demonstrate understanding of fundamental harmonic structures.
• Demonstrate practical knowledge and implementation of pitch, rhythm, and harmony

Lecturer: Anton Koch

Anton Koch is a composer, arranger and orchestrator with extensive experience in live events, film, TV and recording projects. Anton graduated in music from the University of Queensland and performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra while establishing his career as a composer. In 2003, Anton won the inaugural Brian May Scholarship, enabling him to study scoring for film and television at the University of Southern California.
