Expand your music theory knowledge

This is a 5-week intermediate course for adults that builds on the fundamental key areas of music theory and harmony introduced in Music Theory Skills 1 and expands that theoretical knowledge. Students with some theory wishing to refresh their knowledge are encouraged to take the Music Theory Skills 2 course.

Saturdays, 9.00am-11.00am: 31 July & 7, 14, 21, 28 August

The course is delivered online, live via Zoom so a computer with audio and camera is required.

Music Theory Topics

Week 1 – Dominant 7th & Cadences
Week 2 – Further 7th chords
Week 3 – Chord progressions
Week 4 – Modes of the Major Scale
Week 5 – Secondary dominants

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this course you will be able to:
• Demonstrate fundamental musical notation principles of pitch and rhythm.
• Demonstrate understanding of fundamental harmonic structures.
• Demonstrate practical knowledge and implementation of pitch, rhythm, and harmony

Lecturer: Anton Koch

Anton Koch is a composer, arranger and orchestrator with extensive experience in live events, film, TV and recording projects. Anton graduated in music from the University of Queensland and performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra while establishing his career as a composer. In 2003, Anton won the inaugural Brian May Scholarship, enabling him to study scoring for film and television at the University of Southern California.

    Academic Lecturer

    Anton Koch is a composer, arranger and orchestrator with extensive experience in live events, film, TV and recording projects. His credits include ABC TV opera The Divorce, Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley (orchestra conductor), Carols in the Domain, and The Best of Broadway (Sydney Symphony, 2010).
