Applicants are required to attend an interview or live audition and provide a portfolio of two contrasting items in their field of interest.

What you’ll study
The Graduate Certificate in Music extends your existing skills through targeted research and project work in your chosen area of interest. Choose this as a standalone qualification to sharpen your expertise and advance your music career, or as a credited pathway to the Master of Music (MMus).
Throughout your course, you’ll spend 50% of your time immersed in hands-on projects that bring your ideas to life, 30% honing essential research skills, and 20% selecting electives tailored to your unique aspirations within the music industry.
Study Period 1
- Introduction to Music Research (M5MUMR1): Introduces the rigour of academic research across diverse music fields, methodologies, ethics, critical thinking, and information literacy.
- Major Study 1 (M5MUMS1): Practical and reflective unit investigating creative, interpretive, and technical skills in your chosen field through coursework, independent practice-based research, and a significant creative work developed with supervisor guidance.
Study Period 2
- Research Project 1 (M5MURP1): Directed project under supervision: propose a research design, present verbally, conduct a literature review, and deliver a culminating output. Scalable into a Graduate Diploma or the initial phase of your MMus final major research project.

- Music and Sound for Media (M5MUGE1): Essential skills for composing and producing music/sound for screen media.
- Australian Music (M5MUGE4): Explore repertoire, styles, and analysis with a First Nations focus.
- Teaching Techniques – Early/Adult Learners (M5MUGE5/M5MUGE6): Modern pedagogical strategies for young or adult students.
- Production (M5MUGE3): Master the producer’s role in managing recording projects.
- Arts Management (M5MAEM series): Core principles in leadership, policy, funding, marketing, governance, copyright, innovation, and creativity.
- Special Project (M5MUGE2): Professional external project, like competition prep or masterclasses.
