Poppy Reid: Managing Editor, The Brag Media

Media expert shares story.

Poppy Reid

Music Industry Insights is our exclusive interview series featuring the heavyweights and thought leaders of Australian music. Hosted by music industry veteran and AIM Chair Ed St John, the Music Industry Insights series is filmed on Tuesday nights at AIM’s Sydney campus before a live audience and live streamed on the AIMTv YouTube channel. In 2021, the deep dive interviews will also be available as a podcast available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify Podcasts.

This week’s guest: Poppy Reid

Managing Editor of The Brag Media

Poppy Reid is the Managing Editor of Australia’s largest independent music media company, The Brag Media. That means she is the chief decision-maker for a whole pile of influential titles including Rolling Stone Australia, Variety Australia, Tone Deaf, The Brag, The Industry Observer and Don’t Bore Us. She was shortlisted for B&T’s Women in Media Awards in 2017 and a National Live Music Award in 2020.

Like a lot of people in the music industry, Poppy worked her way up from the bottom.  She started out as a part-time intern for industry bible The Music Network. Within six months she was working there full-time. Within a year, she was the editor.

”I believe I have one of the best jobs in the world because I learned to live without a sense of entitlement,’’ says Poppy. “ I’m not entitled to any of the gifts or opportunities I’ve been given and most of them I’ve worked my arse off to get. If you think your dream job is going to fall into your lap, you have a lot of growing up to do. Do what others are not willing to do, and you’ll achieve what they could only dream of doing.”
