Auditioning at AIM
This is your moment to show us who you are as a musician, not just what you can play, but why you belong at AIM.
If you’re based in Melbourne or Sydney, you’ll be invited to attend a live audition at one of our campuses. If you’re located elsewhere in Australia or applying internationally, you’ll have the option to submit your audition and portfolio online instead, so you can apply no matter where you are.
Requirements vary depending on your course, so take a moment to find your program below and read through exactly what you’ll need to prepare.

Performance auditions
If you’re applying for Bachelor of Music (Performance), you’ll audition in person at our Sydney or Melbourne campus. Auditions run year-round, and once your application is in we’ll invite you to book a time that suits you.
Each audition runs for around 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to share your work and talk through your musical background and goals with an academic from your area of study.
It’s a conversation as much as a performance, so come ready with a short introduction about yourself and your journey so far. The more we know about you, the better we can understand how we can help you thrive at AIM.
What to bring:
We don’t provide an accompanist, so please bring either backing tracks on a Bluetooth-compatible device or your own accompanist.
- Guitar and bass: bring your instrument, a tuner and a lead
- Other strings, wind and classical instruments: bring your instrument
- Drummers: bring your sticks, plus your own cymbals if you’d like to use them
- Pianists and singers: you’re all sorted, just come as you are
We provide drum kits, amps and pianos at both campuses.
You’re very welcome to bring a friend or family member along. It’s a big moment, and we’re happy to show them around.

Music Theatre auditions
Music Theatre auditions run in two stages.
Stage 1: Online submission, closes 9 October 2026
Record a video or videos covering:
- Two contrasting music theatre songs that demonstrate your technical skill and musicality
- A 2 to 3 minute monologue showcasing your acting ability
- A 1 to 2 minute video demonstrating your dance ability
Submissions are assessed as they come in, so applying early gives you the best shot at a callback invitation.
Stage 2: On-campus callback, 20 November 2026
Selected applicants are invited to a callback at our Sydney or Melbourne campus. Invitations are issued on a rolling basis, with the final round going out by 30 October 2026.
The callback is a full day of workshops across singing, dancing and acting, designed to reflect the demands of professional training. Our faculty assess more than performance alone, looking at your adaptability, work ethic and capacity for growth.
Offers for our 2027 cohort are extended after this stage. If you can’t attend on the day, contact our Future Students Team and we’ll make alternative arrangements.
Portfolio and online submissions
You’ll submit materials for assessment by an academic in your chosen field, and some courses include a short phone interview with a Future Students advisor.
What you submit varies by course. It might be two contrasting items, an original composition or audio mix with a credit list, a music resume, or a personal statement. Check your course below for the specifics.

If you are applying to the Diploma of Music, Diploma of Music Business, or the Undergraduate Certificate of Music (Online), please submit a music resume outlining any previous musical study, and/or practical music experiences and achievements.
What comes next?
Whether you audition in person or submit online, your work is reviewed carefully by one of our academic staff, and you’ll hear back from us within two weeks.
If you’re successful, you’ll receive a letter of offer to study with us. If your audition is unsuccessful, we’re happy to talk through your options, as there may be another path to studying at AIM.

- Performance, Composition or Creative Technology – two contrasting items (audio, video or scores) showing your ability in that discipline
- Musicology – a second 300–500 word statement on your interest in musicology and any previous experience
- A phone interview with a Future Student advisor.

- Two contrasting items (shared at the live interview/audition or submitted online):
- At least one original composition score, recorded composition/arrangement, or audio mix with a credit list acknowledging all contributors (composer, lyricist, arranger, producer, musicians, engineer).
- A phone interview with a Future Student advisor.
- Two contrasting items (shared at the live interview/audition or submitted online):

For your online submission, please upload a video/videos of the following:
- Two contrasting songs that demonstrate your technical skill and musicality.
- A 2-3 minute monologue that showcases your acting ability.
- A 1-2 minute video highlighting your dance ability.
Stage 2 | Callback Experience (November 20)
Selected applicants will be invited to an exclusive in-person callback held on either our Sydney or Melbourne campus. This full-day intensive represents the final stage of the audition process.
You will participate in a series of workshops across singing, dancing, and acting, designed to reflect the demands of professional training. Throughout the day, our faculty will assess your suitability for the program, looking beyond performance alone to evaluate your adaptability, work ethic, and capacity for growth.
Following this final stage, offers will be extended to candidates who demonstrate the highest level of readiness and potential for our 2027 cohort.

Audition FAQs
It depends on your course. Bachelor of Music (Performance) and Bachelor of Music Theatre involve a performance audition. Every other course is assessed on materials you submit online: a portfolio, a music resume, a personal statement, or a short phone interview with a Future Students advisor. No. AIM courses don’t have an ATAR requirement. We assess you on your audition or portfolio, alongside completion of Year 12 or an equivalent qualification.
Two contrasting pieces. They don’t need to be from opposite ends of the spectrum. Just something different enough that we can see the range of what you do.
It’s one-on-one and runs for about 30 minutes, with roughly 10 minutes of that spent performing. It’s a conversation as much as a performance, so come ready with a short introduction to yourself and your journey so far.
