How to Apply as a Year 12 Student

If you’re currently completing Year 12, you can apply to AIM directly, through UAC (NSW) or VTAC (VIC), or both. We recommend doing both, so you’re not stuck waiting on one outcome. Explore your options below.

Do I need a certain ATAR?

No. AIM assesses you on your audition or portfolio, not your ATAR.

We want to hear you play, write, produce or perform, because that tells us far more about how you’ll do here than a rank does. You’ll still need to have completed Year 12 (or equivalent), but there’s no ATAR cut-off for our courses.

What we look at:

Your audition or portfolio – the main thing. Around 30 minutes, at our Sydney or Melbourne campus, or submitted online.
Year 12 completion – or an equivalent qualification.
A conversation – about your goals, so we can point you at the right course.

What happens after you apply

1. We’ll be in touch

Once your application is in, our Future Students Team will contact you to confirm your details and answer any questions. If your course requires an audition, they’ll invite you to book one.

2. Your audition or submission

What this looks like depends on the course:

If you’re applying for Bachelor of Music (Performance) – you’ll audition in person at our Sydney or Melbourne campus. Auditions run year-round, so you choose a time that works around your school commitments. We’re used to working around trials, exams and assessment periods. If you’re based elsewhere in Australia or overseas, you can submit your audition online instead.

If you’re applying for Bachelor of Music Theatre – you’ll record and upload your submission, then selected applicants are invited to an on-campus callback. Both stages have fixed dates, so check them before you apply.

For all other courses – there’s no in-person audition. You’ll submit a portfolio online in your chosen field, and some courses include a short phone interview. You submit when your materials are ready, so you can work around your exam schedule.

3. Your outcome

You’ll hear back within 1-2 weeks. If you’re successful, you’ll receive a letter of offer, and if you apply and submit mid-year, that means a confirmed place before your final exams.
