Philip Eames is a strikingly versatile and innovative musician, being professionally active as a pianist, composer, musicologist, choral conductor and musical director. The diverse influences of his eclectic professional background constantly cross-pollinate to produce delightfully unexpected results.
As a composer, Philip’s music has frequently been commissioned and performed throughout Australia by artists including the Australian Voices, the Flinders Quartet, and Queensland Ballet, and he was announced the winner of the 2020 Willgoss Choral Composition Prize, the Tagore and ASKM Composition Competitions. Notably in 2019 he collaborated with the Black Square Quartet and the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation to create a large-scale choreographed string quartet “Minjerribah Dreaming” based on the stories of Oodgeroo Noonuccal.
Philip specialises in the performance of modern classical music, and has appeared as concerto soloist with numerous orchestras, including the West Australian Symphony, Queensland Wind Orchestra and Brisbane Philharmonic. As a chamber musician, he has been involved in many world, Australian and UK premieres of major composers, including George Antheil, Matthew Hindson and Donnacha Dennehy.
An active researcher, in 2017 Philip was awarded his PhD with a dissertation on the choral music of Percy Grainger. His research has since been published in Musicology Australia, the Context Journal of Music Research and the Journal of the Australian National Choral Association and received a Special Mention Award in the 2015 MSA National Conference.
