Afro-Latin Ensemble Records at AIM’s Sydney Studio

AIM students selected for the Contemporary Music department‘s Afro-Latin Ensemble had a recording session at AIM Sydney’s state-of-the-art studios recently. We captured a few moments from the energetic session on film. Watch the video below.

AIM’s invitation-only Afro-Latin Ensemble is led by master percussionist and AIM lecturer, Chris Fields. Chris guides students through learning a series of Afro-Cuban pieces that require them to develop new skills and dip their toes into entirely new sonic fusions of sound and language that blend musical cultures in exciting new ways.

As an institution that teaches the widest range of contemporary music styles in the country, we are proud to see our students stretch themselves musically and enjoy the process. We are also excited to see the cross-program collaboration these ensembles activate, with our audio students running the sound desk during the session (supervised by lauded producer, engineer and AIM lecturer, Adrian Bolland).

The ensembles, which run each trimester, feature talented students chosen for their attention to detail, self-discipline and enthusiasm. Each student must perform an Afro-Cuban piece in full to audition. The experience, which encompasses weekly rehearsals, recordings and live performances, provides students with the real-world experience of playing in a professional Afro-Cuban Band.  It is also really fun!
