“I had to learn five songs and two dances in less than three days, and had it not been for my training at AIM, I don’t think I would have been able to produce this at an industry standard”.
Eliza Soriano, a third-year Melbourne Music Theatre student at AIM, has just landed a role in the Australian premiere of the acclaimed musical Hadestown, and it’s huge news! As Eliza steps into her professional debut as Worker 1 in the ensemble and understudies the role of Eurydice, her journey is nothing short of remarkable.
“This all feels very surreal if I’m being honest” Eliza shares. “As a student training at AIM, my ideal path was always to graduate, secure an agent, and hopefully book a job – to be able to say I achieved both of those goals before graduating makes me feel very fortunate”.
For a student, transitioning from the classroom to such a high-profile stage is the ultimate dream! And for Eliza, it’s happening even before she dawns her cap and gown. But she isn’t letting that go to her head. “Since I am still in the process of completing my training, it can be difficult to think of myself as a professional rather than a student. But in these moments, I need to remind myself that AIM has fully equipped and prepared me to take this leap into the industry”.
The Hadestown audition wasn’t just a simple walk in the park either. Eliza explains how she initially wasn’t even planning to audition! But a fellow AIM student convinced her to give it a go. “The audition process stretched over 2 weeks – the first week was three rounds in Melbourne, then the second week was the final round in Sydney. After three dance calls and five singing calls, all I had to do was wait. Thankfully, I got the call and now I’m here! I was so grateful for this audition process – it taught me so much about preparation, commitment and energy”.
Eliza credits much of her success to the training and support she received at AIM Melbourne. “Our lecturers at AIM Melbourne have always insisted that they treat us as professionals, and for that I’m so grateful. Setting and exemplifying industry standards in our classes have shaped the way I prepare, organise and learn material. For these auditions I had to learn five songs and two dances in less than three days, and had it not been for my training at AIM, I don’t think I would have been able to produce this at an industry standard”.
But it’s not just the technical skills that have set her up for success. Eliza highlights the importance of professionalism and attitude, elements ingrained in her through AIM’s training. “Our attitude, posture, and conversations all factor into what makes us a good performer and likeable actor. It is so important to be attentive, kind and position when in these spaces.”
Having performed in productions like ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ (2022), ‘Pippin’ (2023), and ‘Urinetown’ (2024) during her time at AIM, Eliza has had her fair share of stage experience.
“With each production, I learnt so much about the industry and myself as an actor. Often as actors, we hyper-fixate on getting the lead but there is also such beauty and reward in being in the ensemble that I think we tend to forget about. It is not a thankless and forgettable role, it’s extremely challenging and requires great talent.”
As Eliza steps into the professional (and underground…) world of Hadestown, she reflects on the lessons she’s gained from her time at AIM Melbourne. “Doing these three musicals during my time at AIM showed me all the hard work that is required. I love musical theatre and performing, but I know there will be moments when I lack motivation, or it feels too difficult. But doing these shows proved to me that I can persevere even when it gets tough and that the bonds you foster when working in a company are so important – support each other always!”
Eliza also expresses deep gratitude for the support she has received with the faculty at AIM Melbourne. “With my three years of training at AIM Melbourne, my mentors have equipped me with the skills it takes to not only make it into the industry, but to thrive in it. I was taught practical skills of how to learn material promptly and how to conduct myself professionally – I would not have been able to book this job without training at AIM. I think most importantly, my mentors never failed to have my back. I always felt supported, guided and trusted. It is so crucial to have a support network when pursuing musical theatre and me auditioning for Hadestown felt so possible because people over at AIM always believed in me.”
As we close the curtain, Eliza shares heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of her journey at AIM Melbourne. “I want to thank every single person that has taught me at AIM Melbourne, and all the friends I have made whilst training – I will carry each piece of advice with me. I take great pride in representing AIM and I’m so excited for all the new talent that will come out soon. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I couldn’t have done it without you all.”
Eliza’s journey is a testament to the incredible training and support offered at AIM. As she steps onto the professional stage, she’s not just carrying her own dreams, but also the pride of her AIM family. “Can’t wait to see you all underground!”
