In the world of music, one thing is clear: there are endless opportunities if you’re ready to seize them. AIM alumnus Paul Ooi, known as St. Humain, a rising independent artist, embodies how dedication, passion, and an open mind can lead to exciting milestones in the music industry. His journey from a Bachelor of Music (Composition) graduate to an artist signed to Capitol Music Group (USA) and now independent via AWAL, proves that confidence and connections can open doors to new realms of creativity and success.
Skills Locked, Confidence Loaded
St Humain’s love for music started young, but his skill-building journey was a process of constant growth. He recalls how his passion developed over time, “as a young kid, I remember running around the house with this toy cassette recorder, recording random things…But I only picked up the guitar when I was a teenager. I was inspired by whatever was on the radio, plus old bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and artists such as John Mayer as well as boybands and it made me feel like I wanted to write my own songs too.”
For St Humain, confidence came with the learning and collection of skills along the way. He didn’t have all the tools at once, but his willingness to explore different aspects of music gave him a solid foundation to pursue his goals.
“It wasn’t intentional but I guess you could say I collected skills along the way when I needed them, and the result is who I am today”. His experience at AIM helped him hone these skills. The curriculum, which pushed him out of his comfort zone, was integral in his development. Even though music theory wasn’t his strongest suit, the discipline of learning hard topics enabled him to continue growing as an artist. “I think it’s the discipline of doing music when there is no inspiration that has kept me going all the way.”
Small Talk into Big Breaks
AIM also gave St. Humain invaluable connections, not just with his peers but with teachers who had strong industry ties. His experience with instructor Scott Saunders proved particularly beneficial. “It’s cool to see various coursemates do their thing and release music too, and come across others who run recording studios around Sydney…but I think for me it was having a great teacher in Scott Saunders who had some cool industry connections”. This networking not only expanded his professional circle but also opened doors to opportunities he might not have otherwise encountered.
From AIM to K-Pop & Beyond
St Humain’s ability to pivot and evolve as an artist has been key to his continued success. Since graduating from AIM, he has dived into various exciting projects, including songwriting for K-pop idol groups and K-R&B artists. His creativity and adaptability have led him to release several singles, including his recent track “Shared” and his comeback single “Friend” featuring Microdot a South Korean rapper with over 100,000 followers on Instagram.
His story is an inspiring reminder that building a music career takes time, persistence, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. His path wasn’t linear, he didn’t start with all the skills in place, but his journey through AIM provided him with both the technical knowledge and industry connections that helped him thrive.
If you’re considering studying music or embarking on your creative journey, remember that the right mix of passion, hard work, and network-building can open doors to opportunities you never imagined. Stay open to new experiences, take the time to build your skills, and don’t be afraid to make those all-important connections, you never know where they may take you! As St Humain proves, the sky’s the limit.
