Feeling Stuck in the Wrong Course? Here’s How to Start Fresh with a Music Degree

Feeling uninspired or disconnected from your current degree? Whether you’ve just finished Year 12, returned from your gap year, or are reentering the world of tertiary study, there can be a lot of pressure around choosing the right degree, rather than pursuing the path that’s right for you.

If you’ve realised your current degree no longer inspires you, and that your true passion lies in music, transferring to a specialised university like the Australian Institute of Music could be the turning point your future needs.

At AIM, we believe that studying music isn’t just about following a dream; it’s about turning your creativity into a sustainable, exciting career. If you’re ready to take the next step but need a helping hand with the process, that’s what we’re here for. Below, we’ve recapped everything you need to know about transferring your studies to AIM.

Will my previous study count?

If you’re thinking about switching courses, you’ll be happy to know that AIM offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where appropriate.

RPL allows us to assess whether previous study or relevant learning can be recognised towards your new music degree. Where approved, this may reduce the number of units you need to complete.

In some cases, relevant professional or industry experience may also be considered as part of a Recognition of Prior Learning assessment.

To determine eligibility for credit, we will usually require a copy of your academic transcript along with unit descriptions or subject outlines from your previous studies. This allows us to compare your prior learning with AIM’s curriculum and assess whether the relevant learning outcomes have been met. Please note that credit is assessed on a case-by-case basis and is subject to AIM policies and course requirements.

For more details on how to apply for RPL, please visit our Entry Requirements page.
