AIM Staff Deliver First Offshore Program in China

Expanding on our long-standing commitment to cross-cultural education, the Australian Institute of Music is proud to have launched its first offshore program in Hangzhou, China – marking a new chapter in AIM’s nearly 60-year history of nurturing creative talent.

Delivered in collaboration with the Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art (ZVAA), this inaugural program represents a significant milestone in AIM’s growing regional partnerships. Co-designed by ZVAA leaders and AIM’s Head of Educational Engagement and Learning Design, Julian Gough, the units formed part of ZVAA/AIM’s Higher Vocational Education Program in Music Performance, bringing AIM’s specialised curriculum directly to Chinese students.

As well as developing the program, Julian also led the delivery of the units, joined by lecturers Bronte O’Neill, Charmaine Ford, David McLeod, and Head of Melbourne Josh Kyle.

Together with ZVAA staff in Hangzhou, the program will run twice yearly over six intensive weeks to more than 65 undergraduate vocal studies students.

Across the program, students gained valuable insight into AIM’s dynamic approach to music education, quickly responding to the energy and innovation of the teaching team.

“The way that AIM lecturers taught was really innovative,” ZVAA student Zhao Hanxi shared. “Their lesson designs were flexible and varied, which helped spark our interest and get us thinking more deeply. This teaching approach has been really inspiring for me, and it’s given me new ideas for my own future learning and even teaching.”

The collaboration proved equally meaningful for AIM staff, who returned with new inspiration, strengthened professional ties, and a deeper appreciation for the impact of global exchange. “I’m so proud to be involved in this cross-cultural experience with AIM and China,” Academic Lecturer David McLeod reflected.

“This collaboration is more than just an agreement between institutions – it is a bridge between cultures, histories, and dreams.”

Echoing this sentiment,  Lecturer Bronte O’Neill added, “This was my first international academic trip and a true privilege to work with both the AIM and ZVAA teams in delivering this inaugural program. I’m so very grateful for the collaboration, generosity and shared commitment to music education across both communities.”

Formalised during AIM CEO Ben O’Hara’s visit to Hangzhou in May 2025, the strategic partnership will see graduates of The Higher Vocational Education Program in Music Performance qualify for advanced entry into AIM’s Bachelor of Music.

This pathway underscores AIM’s commitment to supporting the next generation of musicians and creative entrepreneurs across the Asia-Pacific region.

“This trip emphasises the energy and ambition across the Asia-Pacific region and speaks volumes about the future of our industry,” Ben shared, adding, “We’re proud to play a part in supporting a vibrant community of creative entrepreneurs and musicians.”

As AIM prepares to welcome the first ZVAA student and faculty cohorts to Australia in 2026, this collaboration stands as both a historic first for the Institute and a powerful expression of its long-term dedication to creative partnership between Australia and China.

By connecting cultures and expanding opportunities for emerging artists, AIM continues to blend passion with purpose and to open new doors across the global music landscape.
