From Passion to Profession: Starting a Music Degree as a Mature-Age Student

While many students may have their path in music mapped out before the end of their final exams, we know that not everyone’s journey into music education follows a straight line.

You might have finished Year 12 many years ago, built a career, raised a family, travelled, or spent years creating music on your own terms, and now, you feel ready to turn that lifelong passion into something more.

At the Australian Institute of Music, we understand that your path to study might look different from others, and that’s exactly what makes it valuable. Whether you’ve been gigging for a decade or rediscovering your creative voice after time away, your music education itself isn’t about linearity; it’s about rhythm, timing, and finding your own beat.

If you’re ready to start your music journey at AIM but still have questions about what studying as a mature-age or non-school-leaver student looks like, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

What age is a mature-age student?

In Australia, a ‘mature-age student’ typically refers to anyone aged 21 or older when applying for an undergraduate course, or 23 and above for postgraduate study.

If you’ve taken time away from study, whether that’s five years or twenty, you’re part of an ever-growing community of learners who’ve found that returning to study later in life brings a depth of perspective that can’t be taught in classrooms alone.

Do mature-age students need an ATAR?

No. You don’t need an ATAR to study at AIM as a mature-age applicant.

AIM values your potential – your skills, passion, portfolio, and life experience – over a number on a page. Entry routes for non-school-leavers often include:

  • An audition or portfolio review, where you can showcase your creative ability.
  • A personal statement, where you can share your music goals and journey so far.
  • Or even previous study or work experience that demonstrates readiness for tertiary study.

This flexible entry means you can begin your music degree at any stage of your academic journey.

Can mature-age students get HECS?

Yes. Mature-age or non-school-leaver students who are Australian citizens or eligible permanent residents can access FEE-HELP to assist with tuition fees during their time at AIM.

If you’re unsure, AIM’s admissions team can help confirm your eligibility and explain how HECS-HELP applies to your chosen course.

What support is available for mature-age students?

At AIM, we understand that starting or returning to tertiary study can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. That’s why we’ve built a student experience designed to support you academically, practically, and personally every step of the way.

Here’s how AIM helps mature-age and non-school-leaver students succeed:

  • Individualised admissions support: From your first enquiry to your first week on campus, AIM’s admissions and student recruitment teams are ready to help you navigate entry requirements, auditions, and course planning to help you start your degree with confidence.
  • Dedicated wellbeing services. Balancing study with work, family, or life commitments can be challenging. AIM provides counselling, wellbeing programs, and mental health support to ensure you have the tools and space to look after yourself while studying.
  • Flexible study options. Many AIM students balance part-time work or family life alongside study. With flexible timetables and a variety of subjects across performance, production, and composition, you can structure your study around your lifestyle.
  • Strong peer and staff community. You’ll join a diverse and welcoming student body with classmates of all ages, backgrounds, and musical interests. Our smaller cohort sizes mean that you won’t get lost in the crowd. You’ll be seen by your lecturers, work collaboratively with your peers, and join a supportive community that shares your passion.
  • Career and industry guidance. AIM’s career development team helps you plan beyond graduation, with mentorship, networking, and practical advice to connect your study experience to real-world opportunities.
