Jeremy Sawkins – ABC Artist in Residence

Sydney-based guitarist and AIM lecturer Jeremy Sawkins, an influential figure in the Australian music scene since the late ’70s, continues to share his love for music from Australia and around the world as ABC’s Artist In Residence for May 2024! Jeremy is a seasoned performer, composer, and recording artist, and has had a prolific career, performing with notable musicians such as saxophonists David Ades and Dale Barlow in his early days and later joining the Roger Frampton-led band ‘Intersection’.

One of Jeremy’s longest-running associations has been with Miroslav Bukovsky’s ARIA award-winning Jazz/World-Music group ‘Wanderlust,’ which he joined in 1996. His versatility as a musician has made him an in-demand sideman and a respected leader of his own groups, including Jazz Organism and the Jeremy Sawkins Trio.

Throughout his career, Jeremy has collaborated with a diverse range of artists. His impressive list of collaborations includes Jackie Orszacsky, Tina Harrod, Tom Burlinson, Grace Knight, Darren Percival, Katie Noonan, Kate Miller-Heidke, Wendy Matthews, Lloyd Swanton, Bernie McGann, James Morrison, and Monica Trapaga. Recently, he has even shared the stage with guitarist Dominic Miller and the legendary Sting himself in 2023!

As ABC’s Artist In Residence, Jeremy brings a curated selection of music from some of his favourite musicians, such as John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, Pat Martino, Weather Report, and Bernie McGann, alongside his own recordings as a leader and collaborator. His residency is a celebration of his extensive contributions to the music industry and his passion for sharing great music.

In addition to his performance career, Jeremy Sawkins has been a dedicated music educator since he began teaching in 1979. He has proudly been a lecturer at AIM since the Contemporary Music course started in 1992, influencing a new generation of musicians with his expertise and experience “I think my role is to inspire and educate. To nurture the students’ appreciation for music and open the doors that allow them to create their own music and consolidate their own identities. For many young people who are navigating the challenges of becoming adults, fitting in and finding their identities, being involved in music can be a great conduit for developing self-esteem and finding that identity. I always hope that they will remember my influence with a sense of positivity and unconditional appreciation.”

AIM is truly fortunate to have such talented, experienced, and passionate musicians on board, dedicated to helping our students grow and excel. We are so grateful for their contributions and commitment to us. A special thank you goes to Jeremy for his outstanding efforts and accomplishments. Well done Jeremy!
