When AIM’s Music Theatre students performed Ladies in Black, the production was more than just a show. It was a chance to connect with a story set in Sydney in 1959, right on the doorstep of our campus. For Music Theatre student Diana Beech, who stepped into the lead role of Lisa, the experience was unforgettable!
“I was drawn to Ladies in Black because of the themes of female empowerment and that it was also set in Sydney in 1959. We were very lucky to be able to put on a show that is right outside our doorstep. Especially performing it on the harbour!”
This year’s production was staged at the Rebel Theatre, right by Sydney Harbour, giving students a professional venue and a stunning set for the performance. From the lively chaos of Pandemonium, set during the Boxing Day sales at Goodes, to the quiet beauty of The Fountain, which marks Lisa’s discovery of her passion for poetry and writing, Diana embraced every moment. “I loved performing Pandemonium, it was so chaotic as it is set when it is Boxing Day sales at Goodes. I also loved performing The Fountain. This song is the introduction to Lisa’s love of poetry and writing and the first time the audience see her passion.”
To get into character, Diana turned to music as a way to step back in time. “I made myself a 50s playlist that helped me get into character. I had never done it before and thought why not give it a try. It worked!”
Her performance was not just the result of personal preparation. Diana is quick to credit her teachers and the support she found at AIM for helping her grow into the role. “I am very grateful for all my teachers that prepared me for this show. My confidence has grown so much. I feel very lucky to have such supportive mentors at AIM.”
At AIM, music theatre students like Diana are encouraged to take bold creative steps while developing the skills they need for professional performance. From industry-level productions to one-on-one guidance from expert staff, AIM prepares performers to find their voice and their confidence on stage.
