Is gaming the future of music? As our industry goes through its hardest chapter, we've been looking into what's next. The gaming industry has exploded during the pandemic, with revenues growing to (unsurprisingly) almost four times the music industry in 2020. This lockdown-resistant community also put their money (and their music) where their mouth is - streaming almost double the music and buying more than double the merch in 2020 (according to the MiDia report) compared to the average. A huge thank you to all of those who joined us on campus in Melbourne last week for our exclusive NAIDOC week performance and Q&A session with @kee.ahn and our very own First Nation's Community Centre Coordinator, Michael Higgins. Hosted by fellow AIM staff member, Tracee Hutchison, we scraped in just under the wire before the Melbourne lockdown and we are incredibly grateful.

This week at AIM, our Contemporary students in Sydney and Melbourne will be welcoming guest speaker, Zoe Hauptmann, to their online Performance Studies class.

Zoe has become one of the most in-demand bass players around playing with the likes of Missy Higgins, Ian Moss, Paul Kelly and Neil Finn, Justine Clarke, Elana Stone, Tim Minchin, Katie Noonan and many others. Between gigs, Zoe is also Creative/Artistic Director for SIMA, musical director for Australian Women in Music Awards, Artistic Programmer for Wangaratta Jazz Festival and founding member of Ettalong Jazz Festival.

Zoe will be joining the students and their teacher, Daryl McKenzie, in a discussion about gender and diversity in the music industry. Zoe has always been passionate about addressing the gender imbalance in the music industry and still actively seeks to bring change.

We're looking forward to the enlightening discussion that is bound to happen, and are proud to be promoting and supporting change in the industry.

“Find a little gratitude in small victories”

A love letter to all those in lockdown from AIM student @thebenjaminnolan 💪💪

“Whatever you might be feeling at the moment is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. A lot of this is out of our control, remember to go easy on yourself, to focus on what is in your control and find a little gratitude in the small victories and moments. Take the opportunity to do some of the stuff you’ve been putting off. For me it’s been making an active effort to write that song, make that playlist, clean out that wardrobe. Try and reconnect with your passions and contemplate the path you’re on and realign yourself with your dreams, goals and ambitions. I discovered some new bands and artists over lockdown which ignited some inspiration in me and allowed me to reconnect with why I love music. Remember to eat good food and drink water, check in on your friends, family and yourself. Take a bubble bath and ask yourself what you need.”

When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples talk about Country it is spoken of like a person. Country is family, kin, law, lore, ceremony, traditions, and language. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples it has been this way since the dawn of time.

Healing Country means hearing the pleas to provide greater management, involvement, and empowerment by Indigenous peoples over Country.
Healing Country means embracing First Nation’s cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage. That the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders are respected equally to and the cultures and values of all Australians.

To celebrate NAIDOC Week, AIM Melbourne will welcome Kuku Yalanji, Jirrbal and Badu Island singer/songwriter Kee'ahn to perform for staff and students in a special lunchtime event. Joining Kee’ahn in a Q&A Session will be @supportact 's First Nations Community Engagement / Social Worker, Cerisa Grant (a proud Warlpiri, Gurindji and Jawoyn woman, born and raised in Katherine NT) and AIM’s own First Nations Community Centre Coordinator, Michael Higgins (proud Djab Wurrang man).

The event, co-hosted by AIM’s Tracee Hutchison, will kick off at 12pm on Thursday 15 July in the Peter Calvo Auditorium and is open to all AIM staff, students and alumni.

The NAIDOC 2021 theme – Heal Country! – calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

We recognise the traditional custodians of the lands in which we live, work and learn. In Warrang, we acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. In Naarm, we acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.

We extend this respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Straight people.

Today, our startup incubator iHub will host the first episode of iHub Music Innovation Insights, our new talk series and podcast that will explore what is happening at the forefront of music, technology and other industries. Our first guest: Jacqui Louez Schoorl, CEO of @jaxstamusic (a searchable database dedicated to ensuring musicians are credited for their works). She will be exploring music and health with Nicc Johnson of Music Health, a startup that enables its users to take control of their mental wellbeing via innovative music therapy.
