Music Industry Insights is our exclusive interview series featuring the heavyweights and thought leaders of Australian music. Hosted by music industry veteran and AIM Chair Ed St John, the series is filmed on Tuesday nights at AIM’s Sydney campus before a live audience and live streamed on the AIMTv YouTube channel. In 2021, the deep dive interviews will also be available as a podcast.
This week’s guest: Heath Johns – Managing Director, BMG
BMG describes itself as a “new kind of music company for a new world,” a rights management business that proudly espouses the values of Fairness, Transparency and Service. With a rapidly growing roster of Australasian artists including AC/DC, Neil Finn, Nick Cave, Tim Minchin, Tame Impala and Jet, the new-look BMG is the fastest-growing music company in Australia. Their services include music publishing, recorded music, synch and licensing. Their international film division has been responsible for some of the best music documentaries of recent memory.
Can companies like BMG rewrite the rule book of the way music rights are managed and monetised? Will “fairness” and “transparency” catch on? In this fascinating instalment of AIM’s Industry Insights series, AIM Chair Ed St John chats with BMG’s Heath Johns about the future of the music industry and so much more.
