As digital media expands, so does the demand for talented composers in film, television, video games and music. The Bachelor of Music – Composition trains you to become a composer with originality, heightened musical ability and technical mastery. 

HANDS-ON STUDIO EXPERIENCE 

Our state-of-the-art facilities include custom-designed production suites containing Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), sample libraries, synthesisers, audio plugins and mastering software.  

You will develop the skills to complete whole works in different mediums and genres such as Western Art Music, Popular Music, Music Theatre, Electronic Music, Screen Music, Games Music, Improvised Music, Jazz and more.  

BECOME AN IN-DEMAND COMPOSER 

The Composition specialisation helps you build a portfolio of work to land paid work and start your career as a composer. 

You will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of composition for today’s major media. You will collaborate with students across departments to create original songs, arrangements, orchestrations, soundtracks and multimedia installations. 

At the conclusion of your course, you will gain an industry-recognised qualification with multiple career opportunities such as:

Try a Diploma of Music (Pathway into Bachelor of Music) 

Not quite ready for a full three-year degree? See if tertiary music studies are for you with a one-year Diploma of Music. You will take electives across all our programs, gain musical literacy, and build foundational academic skills. You will achieve an industry-recognised qualification and be accredited for all your completed courses if you decide to continue into your Bachelor of Music as a second-year student. 

To gain entry into our Bachelor of Music programs, applicants are required to audition and must prepare two contrasting items.

To maximise your chance of entering the Composition course, we recommend the provide examples of original creative work that demonstrates your compositional and/or production skills.

  • Complete pieces, not small samples
  • A credit list for each original work, containing your name as the composer and acknowledging other additional contributors.

AND 

Must have achieved ONE of the following:  

  • Satisfactory completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Year 12 Certificate in the last 2 years (such as HSC or VCE*) and satisfy the minimum English language entry of a Band 3 in HSC English Standard (or equivalent)  
  • Satisfactory completion of IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma qualification in the past 2 years  
  • Satisfactory completion of an AQF VET qualification (Certificate IV and above, or equivalent as assessed by DET)  
  • Satisfactory completion of at least 6 months full-time tertiary study (AQF level 5 or higher)  
  • Be a mature age student (21 years or older)  

 

*NOTE: Completion of Senior VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) does not meet these requirements.
