AIM Music Theatre Audition: Melbourne

All students who wish to enter the Bachelor of Music Theatre must successfully audition to enter this course.  An open-call audition day will enable a collaborative and experience-based audition, working with faculty and getting a sense of what student life is like at AIM.


What to expect at a musical theatre audition

This audition is for study commencement for Study Period 1, 2024.    

Across the course of the day, prospective students will participate in a series of classes in addition to a 1:1 interview/audition. 

  1. Singing. Students will be assessed on vocal technique and development potential in addition to general musicality. Two contrasting pieces are required to be performed. All sheet music in correct keys should be supplied by the prospective student.   
  1. Acting. Students will be required to perform a prepared monologue (2-3) mins of their own choosing in addition to general acting instruction on the day assessing skill level and potential for development.  
  1. Dance. Students will be assessed on their technical abilities, approach to dance/movement and potential for development.

Stephen Gray – Course Convenor

Stephen works extensively throughout Australia as a conductor, arranger and pianist, his most recent engagements being Musical Director for Guys & Dolls (Ambassador Theatre Group), Associate Musical Director & Conductor for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical (Backrow Productions) & Dusty – The Original Pop Diva (Dusty Productions).

Johanna Allen – Academic Lecturer

Johanna Allen is one of Australia’s most acclaimed singers and actors. She has worked within musical theatre, theatre, opera, film, television, and cabaret. She also works as a director, writer and curator/artistic director across theatre, festivals and television.
